                                                    HAZARDS

 Hazard is anything that brings about danger and can cause an accident. There are a number of hazards we face daily They include:

 • Poisonous gases 


• Fire outbreaks 

• Falling objects 

• Poor lightening systems

 • Faulty electrical gadgets

 • Explosions

                                               CAUSES OF HAZARDS

 A number of things can cause hazards. Paramount amongst them are: 

• Carelessness 

• Ignorance 

• Forgetfulness 

• Distraction 

• Careless handling of equipment 

• Inattentiveness 

HOW TO PREVENT HAZARDS 

• Always wear protective clothing (nose mask, helmet, cloves, boots, goggles, lab coat etc) 

• Properly handle all equipment • Always ask questions if you do not know 

• Make sure the working environment is neat and clean 

                                                 SAFETY SIGNS

 There are a number of signs we see at workplaces and others to guide us from accidents. They have been grouped as mandatory, warning and prohibitory signs. 

1. MANDATORY SIGNS These are compulsory signs that spell out specific instructions and they must be obeyed. They are usually indicated by blue and white colours. 



2. PROHIBITORY SIGNS These are signs that intend to prevent us from taking certain actions that may likely cause accidents. They are indicated by a red ring and a line across it. 



3. WARNING SIGNS These signs caution us of impending danger. They are represented in yellow triangles or rectangles with black boundaries. 


                                                   FIRST AID 

First aid is the first and immediate treatment given to an injured person. We administer first aid to: 

• to prevent death 

• to prolong life 

• to prevent further injury 

• to relieve pain First aid kit is a small box that contains some items needed to administer first aid. Some of these items are in the picture below:
